A New Model of Indo—European Subgrouping and Dispersal

چکیده

In this century two great discoveries have shaken our view of the Indo—European family tree and protolanguage. The first was the discovery of Hittite, which in turn revealed the existence of an Anatolian branch of Indo—European; the second was the discovery in Central Asia of languages belonging to the previously unknown Tocharian branch of the family. Yet as important as these are, they are not the only twentieth century archaeological finds with Indo—European ramifications. In this paper I will explore the implications of a less dramatic set of discoveries for Indo—European subgrouping. I begin with a question posed in recent work by Johanna Nichols. Like many profound questions, this one is both shockingly obvious and disturbingly obscure: Why does Indo—European have so many branches? Ten are fully documented, and the count rises if you add the so—called ‘minor’ languages – Phrygian, Macedonian, Thracian, Venetic, and others known only through inscriptional remains. This is shown graphically in (1):

The Distribution of Data in Word Lists and its Impact on the Subgrouping of Languages

This work reveals the reason for the bias in the separation levels computed for natural languages with only a small amount of residues; as opposed to stochastically normal distributed test cases like those presented in Holm (2007a). It is shown how these biased data can be correctly projected to true separation levels. The result is a partly new chain of separation for the main Indo-European br...

European option pricing of fractional Black-Scholes model with new Lagrange multipliers

In this paper, a new identification of the Lagrange multipliers by means of the Sumudu transform, is employed to  btain a quick and accurate solution to the fractional Black-Scholes equation with the initial condition for a European option pricing problem. Undoubtedly this model is the most well known model for pricing financial derivatives. The fractional derivatives is described in Caputo sen...

Analysis of Indo - Iranian Trade

This paper focuses on Indo-Iranian merchandise trade for a period of 30 years from1980-81 to 2009-10. The study is based on econometric modeling comprising 3 versions of the RWM model and alternative forms and specification of regression functions. RWM model(s) evaluates the stationary nature of time series data relating to GNP, Exports, Imports and total merchandise Indo-Iranian trade. Dickey-...

Ancestry-constrained Phylogenetic Analysis Supports the Indo-european Steppe Hypothesis

Discussion of Indo-European origins and dispersal focuses on two hypotheses. Qualitative evidence from reconstructed vocabulary and correlations with archaeological data suggest that IndoEuropean languages originated in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and spread together with cultural innovations associated with pastoralism, beginning c. 6500–5500 bp. An alternative hypothesis, according to which Ind...

Your place or mine? A phylogenetic comparative analysis of marital residence in Indo-European and Austronesian societies.

Accurate reconstruction of prehistoric social organization is important if we are to put together satisfactory multidisciplinary scenarios about, for example, the dispersal of human groups. Such considerations apply in the case of Indo-European and Austronesian, two large-scale language families that are thought to represent Neolithic expansions. Ancestral kinship patterns have mostly been infe...
